Top Ten Tuesday: Non-Bookish Sites I Love

Hey guys! Yes, it’s Tuesday again, and it’s time for Top Ten Tuesday, a bookish meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, as always. This week, ironically, the topic is non-bookish websites I love.

I’ll be honest, if I’m not reading, I’ll be on social media namely tumblr, twitter or youtube. I’ve tried to pick websites that aren’t so mainstream or typical, and I hope you like it! I’ll be linking all the sites in the their respective headings.

8tracks

I love 8tracks! It’s a community where people submit playlists for literally anything they want. I love using this when I’m studying – there are so many wonderful study playlists out there, for whatever mood I’m in. There’s also themed playlists that users create that can be based on their favourite books or any fandom, really. I can guarantee that there’s something for everyone.

Coffitivity

If music is distracting me, but I want some background noise, coffitivity is my go-to! It’s a site that has ambient noises from cafes, which plays on loop in the background. There’s different ones, my personal favourite being the University Undertones. I love this site and really recommend it to everyone.

Duolingo

Duolingo is a free website that allows people to learn a second language! There’s many languages to choose from; the most popular languages for english speakers to learn are Spanish, French and German, but there’s also some obscure languages such as Welsh. I really like this because every day you use the app, you gain xp, and if you continually do the exercise, you’ll have a streak that you won’t want to break, pushing you to learn the language. I’ve been using it in my spare time to learn French, although I’ve also experimented with Russian as well. It’s also avaliable as an app on your smartphone, so you can learn on the go.

Codecademy

If you’re not into languages, but want to learn how to code, Codecadmy is a really good site to start! It breaks down the basics of HTML and CSS so that anyone can understand. It also has more advanced coding such as Python and Ruby if you’re already sufficient in the basics. It’s really good to know even just the basics of HTML and CSS, especially for blogging as then you have the freedom to do whatever you want with your posts/layout.

Momentum extension on Chrome

This is on a slight tangent, but the Momentum extension on Chrome is fantastic! It replaces your new tab page with pretty scenery that changes everyday, and it features a big clock, as well as a section you can write your aims for the day. It also comes with a to do list which is handy. To be honest, I don’t use the features very much – I just got it for the aesthetics and the nice photography that it features each day.

Tab for a Cause

If you’re not really that into pretty backgrounds, but want to replace your rusty Chrome new tab page, then Tab for a Cause is great! Every time you open a tab you gain points, and once you gain a certain amount of points, they will translate that into real money that goes towards a particular charity! The charity changes every now and then, so that the money gets around. It’s also free, and doesn’t cost a thing. It will probably also get you on a tab opening addiction.

I’m sure most of you have heard of this one, but just in case you haven’t, this is a really good website if you’re looking for new fonts. It’s got a really wide variety of fonts to choose and download from. All of them are free too, if you’re just using them for personal projects.

Stumbleupon

Stumbleupon is a site that allows you to, well, stumble upon things based on your personal interests. It tailors your preferences to give really cool website recommendations. It’s a website that will have you clicking and scrolling for hours on end before you even realise it.

Furry Paws

Furry Paws is a virtual dog-breeding web sim game that allows you to breed, train and show your very own dogs! I haven’t actually played this in so long, but recently, I’ve just been visiting and I miss it so much! It’s really fun and has a really large community of players that you can interact with.
