Hey everyone! Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish meme that is created and hosted by the folks at The Broke and the Bookish. Today’s theme is centred around books for a particular book club, and in honour of the genre I’ve been reading a lot lately, I’ve decided to do YA contemporary. Without further ado, here we go:
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
I still stand by the fact that this is the one contemporary YA that everyone needs to read, especially since the book itself is premised around a fangirl.
Rock by Anyta Sunday
This is a really recent read of mine, and while it’s not entirely YA, it’s still a really good story that I think everyone should read. The cover may be a bit misleading but I really enjoyed how diverse it was.
The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord
I love anything Emery Lord, and it wouldn’t be a contemporary book list without mentioning any of her books! The Start of Me and You is a captivating read and has some very interesting plot twists that even I wasn’t expecting.
One Paris Summer by Denise Grover Swank
Of course I had to include this, which is a cute romance that involves music and Paris, two of my favourite things. There’s also family and friend drama thrown in the mix as well, which I guess makes the perfect recipe for a cute contemporary read.
PS I Like You by Kasie West
Another recent read of mine. I really enjoy Kasie West books, and this was no exception. It’s got everything you’d want in a contemporary romance, including the fluff.
Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover
I know CoHo isn’t exactly YA (more NA), but the writing and plot of this story is good enough that I think it deserves a mention in this list. I really enjoyed Maybe Someday just because of the themes and characters in this book, all of which are very relevant today.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
Another book which I wasn’t expecting to be as good as it was, but I actually loved it. It also explores diversity in YA literature, something that I really respect and really enjoyed about this book.
Paper Princess by Erin Watt
While this book isn’t the best in terms of written prose, it’s on my list because of how fun it was to read. If you’ve read The Selection by Kiera Cass, it’s a little like that, but has much more mature content and also is set in the present. Also, I just really like the cover because it’s so nice.
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
This book is still one of my favourites to this day even though it’s been a good while since I’ve read it. It’s also set in Paris, like One Paris Summer, and is also very well written.
Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella
I included this because not only does it have a character with anxiety, but also because it’s hilarious and light-hearted despite the heavy themes. It would add to the diversity of topics that are explored in YA contemporary, which I think is really important.
So those are some books I think everyone should consider if you were to make a YA contemporary book club! These are a very select few of my favourites, and there are many other books that could also be read in addition to these.
What are some of the books you would’ve included? Let me know in the comments!
I don’t read much Contemporary so this list is great for me. I really like the sound of Finding Audrey, thanks for the recs. :)

I have Fangirl on my holds list at the library right now! I don’t read a lot of contemporary, but I keep meaning to give Rainbow Rowell a try.

Love your choices! I’ve read a lot of these and Fangirl is one of my favourites! I’ve done a similar post, only shorter, because I’m lazy, mind having a look?
